Our Stay at the Mtoni Resort near Stone Town, Zanzibar

We arrived in Zanzibar with a group of nineteen people, friends of Mike Solomon from Arusha. The group had our little personal bus and driver. We stayed at the Mtoni Marine four Kilometers from Stone Town in December 3, 2009. The Marina is right beside the ruins of the Sultan Sayyid Said Palace, place of birth of the famous Princess Salme. We had very little to complain about this hotel. We stayed in a Palm Court room, we had a little patio with a little table. It was great to sit outside for a drink. We could not see the sea really well from there. Too many trees. There was a shaded forest right in front. The rooms on the second floor probably had a better view. Our room was usually $170 dollars but our travel agent got it for around 130 U.S dollars. It was was very clean and elegantly decorated in Arabic Style. We had beautiful hibiscus flowers spread out through our king-size bed, they smelled lovely. There was also a great aroma of spices floating through the room, probably cloves.

The place has two major restaurants: The Zanzibar Sports Cafe and the Mtoni Restaurant by the pool there was also a Splash Bar. I did not see it open too often.

We hate and had breakfast at both places and the food was generally very good, although it was a bit pricey for Zanzibar standards.

The resort also made available free Internet. We were able to chat with or kids who stayed back in Canada, by using Facebook.

One of the big attractions of the resort is the lovely pool. Kids and adults alike, loved to play and swim in it. The pool was very well maintained.

The beach had a lot of seaweed, very people used it. Half a kilometer north there was a lot of garbage on the beach.

Unfortunately, while we were there, their was a power shortage between Zanzibar and the mainland. There was a breakdown affecting the undersea cable providing electricity from the mainland. They shut down the power at night at the hotel. The rest of the time they used an expansive option, generators. The first night, we were not prepared and the windows were all shut and we could not see and we were unable to open them. We baked and we sweated, we barely slept.
