Our Trip to Spain (2002)

We arrived in Spain crossing the border north of Barcelona. We stayed in Lerida by the super highway at a three-star hotel five minutes from downtown Lerida (LLeida) in a town called Alfes the hotel was called Hotel LLeida. I think we paid around 70 euros. We had a great breakfast. Nadia loved to put whole oranges in a juice machine. She loved watching the juice drip. Of course, she liked the taste. The room was also comfortable and clean.

We made our way towards Madrid stopping along the way to take pictures and to go to a restaurant.

While in Madrid, we got lost looking for the highway leading to Portugal. It was not my intention to go to this big city, but we could not find the highway. It didn't took very long and we kept going too far and we were right in downtown. I stopped to buy a map. We were able to find her way out, but not before we had one of our most challenging driving experiences. I was stuck in a huge traffic circle. Car were coming from all directions. It seemed car were squeezing through piles of other cars and cutting everybody off. Slowly I made my way to the circle. I was in the middle of about seven lanes. Suddenly, I saw the exit that I needed to drive to Portugal. I did no what to do. I was not sure who had priority. I asked Nadia to be quiet, I needed to concentrate so I would not get into an accident. I checked over my shoulder and slowly, I made my way right in front of me hoping nobody will hit me. Miraculously it worked. Hurrah, I was on my way to Portugal. As we got closer to Vilar Formosa, the Portuguese border town, I became emotional. We finally arrived, this is my home, this is my country. Saudades no more.

When my holidays were over in Portgal we had to go through Spain again. We visited El Burgo de Osma. It was late at night the place was magic. The old part of town was all illuminated. You could see the cathedral and the fortress in all its splendor. You can actually go inside and there are many restaurants. It was one of the nicest places to take a stroll after a hard drive. We stopped at a nice restaurant and we had a quick little meal. Later on we stopped at a hotel on the highway near Soria. We paid only 35 euros.

To avoid paying tolls that are excessive in Europe, we stayed out of the super highways. We made our way to LLerida mainly by using the national 122. We wanted to go to Andorra and snowboard, Nadia skied. For a while we followed the Segre river until we reached the reservoir by Oliana. There was what seemed to be a lake we took some pictures which was actually a reservoir surrounded by amazing sharp mountains. I took a picture of Nadia by the water with the village of Coll de Nargo behind.( I assume that is the town because there is no other close by in the region). It is truly an amazing place. We finally arrived in Andorra later.
