My Trip to Portugal, 1988- This page is dedicated to the memory of my sister Lidia Costa (Candido). We'll always love you...and I will always miss you.

In 1988 I came to Portugal to visit my parents. I was studying at the Faculte St-Jean in Alberta and I needed a break. After ordering my passport, I had it mailed by Loomis, unfortunately I did not get my passport on time and I had to buy another airplane ticket. I found some cheap tickets to Paris, France in the Citiere Mall in La Prairie, Quebec. Once in France, I only visited Paris a little, I was too impatient, I wanted to get to Portugal as quick as possible, I missed my parents and my village Serredade where I was born. I found a train going to Portugal, back then the train was one of the cheapest ways of getting to Portugal. I met a girl in Paris in the train station, she asked me where I was going and she said, "Puis-je aller avec toi dit???". It translates, can I go with you. I laughed and politely refused. I am not sure if she was serious or not.

It was a lot of fun in the train. I met a lot of interesting people. One couple were studying in Moscow Russia. Russia was communist back then. They gave me a couple of coins and bills from the Soviet Union. The guy was Portuguese and the girl was from Colombia. Nobody was checked more than the Colombian girl at the border between France and Spain. I also met a guy from France he loved to play the accordion. There was also some Dutch girls. It was also fun to sit in the wagon restaurant. It was a great sensation to arrive in Portugal.

In Portugal, my cousin Isabel Pessoa had brought two of her friends from La Prairie, Quebec. They were two sisters Johanne and France Tranquille. I also met some people from Lagoas who introduced me to their friends from France. We spent a lot of time together at the beach, suntanning and playing a beach racket game. We also went to a few fiestas. France and I became really good friends. She became my girlfriend for a while. We went to the Olhos de Fervenca walking in the water, possibly infected with all sorts of creatures such as snakes, through the forest. I scared a little bit the girls. Overall, this was a great trip. At the end, I left to Spain with France and Johanne.
