Our trip to New England

In the summer of 1993 we made a trip with our friend Randall Woudstra through the East Coast of the United States. We rented a Ford Taurus. We left La prairie Quebec and we went to Vermont it was near the 4th of July there was American flags everywhere. We went to Montpellier in the state of Vermont. We stopped in the town of Woodstock popular for its numerous classical and Victorian houses and buildings. They have a great downtown known as the "green" . It's one of the most coveted places to live in the state. We also visited the covered bridge.

After that we started to look for a place to camp and spent the night. We ended up in Meredith New Hampshire. We visited the lake. Meredith is situated beside the Lake Winnipesaukee. The town is known as the heart of the Lakes Region, it's surrounded by lakes and gorgeous mountains nearby. It's located in Central New Hampshire, it has 253 islands and the area is 72 square miles. We enjoyed watching the fireworks during July 4th and walking on the marina.

We visited the state of Maine and one of its jewels the Acadia National Park. We visited the town of harbor described by the chamber of commerce as such: "The magic of Bar Harbor…romance, adventure, the rock-bound coast and soaring granite cliffs." We went to a restaurant and I remember having those excellent mussels in some sort of mustard sauce. I often make that recipe at home since that day. We also went to the top of Cadillac mountain. On top , it's the first place where you can see the sunrise in the Eastern Unitate States. You have great vistas as far as your eyes can see. We also visited the crystal clear Sandy Beach in the park. Great sandy beach.

We also went to Kenneybunkport I visited a sports card store. I bought some cards. We saw also the summer house of George Bush senior in Walkers Point, Kenneybunkport. Many foreign presidents have been invited to visit and stay with the Bush family. I felt that I was staring right into history. Many tourists were taking pictures.

In Quebec we often heard of Old Orchard, I wanted to see this summer resort for myself. We went to the Old Orchard Beach a lovely place. There is a very long sandy beach with a long pier. We took a swim in the waters of the Atlantic. The water was fairly warm.

On a Sunday we also had the pleasure to go to church. We went to a Southern Baptist congregation. The pastor was quite proud of that denomination. During his sermon he often boasted about the Baptists.

We made our way to the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts. We stayed in a campground, I believe it was a National Park or a State Park probably Nickelson's and we only paid four dollars a night. We also visited many beaches in the area. There is a fee to park on most beaches. The beaches were warm and beautiful. One time we went to the water and we could see far away the lightning kissing the water. It was quite a show. After awhile we realized it may not be a good thing to stay in the water much longer.

The food on the Cape is pretty average. A lot of locals consider good food when a restaurant serves a lot of it, buffet style, they are not worried about the quality but the quantity. Even One thing that Tara really liked there were the many old cottages and all the beautiful homes surrounded by great gardens.

We visited Provincetown at the point of Cape Cod. There are plenty of Portuguese there. I had some of the famous Portuguese expressos and custard tarts. I felt at home.

Our car broke down. I was putting it on drive and It was backing up. It was pretty dangerous. I was driving on drive and the engine was making a loud noise. I was only on the first and second speed. The shift box was all messed up, I did not know how I was able to make it to a garage. We did not have time to go to the Kennedys hometown of Hyannis Port.

We stopped at a gas station and a good Italian boy called Joe found the problem. It was a piece of plastic of about a dollar that was unscrewed. Because of a dollar we could have wrecked the whole car. I did not trust much the cars Ford after that day.

We went back and overall we had an excellent trip. It was great to have Randall around we always had a lot to laugh about.
